Summer in Southern Sweden: My Top 5 Places to Swim Near Malmö
Summer in Sweden is incredible! The weather is unpredictable, so you must stay tuned to be ready to go to the beach as soon as possible. Besides a beautiful Baltic Sea coast and Öresund strait from Malmö to Helsinborg, many lakes are hidden here and there in Skåne - the Southernmost part of Sweden, where I temporarily live.
Swedes like to swim (there are about 100 000 lakes in Sweden!), and the season usually begins on Midsommar at the end of June: to swim in a lake is part of the traditional celebration on that day. But they also have so-called Kallbadhus (open-air baths) for another kind of swimming experience in winter.
I was born in Kherson (Ukraine), the city on one of the major European rivers - Dnipro. During the last five years in Ukraine, I lived in Odesa, where my apartment is located a few hundred meters from a beach. So swimming is my personal tradition and a mandatory attribute of summer. Now I spend a lot of time exploring lakes and places to swim here in Skåne and will gladly share with you those places I consider the best, based on my 1.5-year experience here.

Saxtorpssjöarna
Saxtorp Lakes are our family's favorite place this summer! The water here is incredibly clear, the sand beach is wide enough, the pine trees around create an aromatic and cozy atmosphere, and the island on the lake is just beautiful. There are public toilets and free parking. The place is dog-friendly, and you can meet many of them enjoying swimming as well as people.
All shores are covered with beautiful wildflowers and berries, such as fireweed, wild raspberries, rubus, and others. But before picking up flowers, you should check if they are not protected as an endangered species.
I'm sure this place is beautiful all year round, not only in summer. It is worth visiting for swimming, hiking, or a picnic.

Vaxsjön badplats
We discovered this spot when we visited Skånes Djurpark (zoo) last summer. It is a final point on the zoo's map, where visitors (mostly parents with kids) can take a rest and swim in this spectacular little lake. But other times we came directly to the lake without paying to visit the zoo. Like other lakes in Sweden, the lake is accessible to everyone and free.
This place has piers to get into the water and a floating pier in the middle for jumping. This is the most exciting attraction for kids. Also, for barbecue lovers, there is equipped place to make fire and prepare grill sausages. Toilets, parking, and boat rental - there are everything for spending a nice day in nature.

Sandstranden Höllviken - Kämpinge
This beach is located in a nature reserve (Kämpinge Strandbad Naturreservat), and this is the most luxurious place on my list. Paths in the pine forest lead you to the impressive sand dunes covered with unique plants that end up with the pure sand beach. In the hot summer air, you can feel the incredible aroma of the resin and warm sand mixed with fresh sea air.
There are a restaurant and two kiosks on the beach, where you can treat yourself with ice cream or a cold drink. And as on the other sea beaches, there are also ice cream vendors strolling along the coast with refrigerators and parasols. The entire resort vibe in one place! I love it!
Note that there may be a lot of people in high season, but if you are not a first-row person, you can always find a place to throw your towel in the sand dunes.

Lomma Beach
Lomma is a lovely Scandinavian resort town on the Öresund coast with its harbor, promenade, restaurants, ice cream kiosks, and other summer delights. I love this place because of its unique vibe and close distance to Malmö or Lund. The road here wouldn't take much time, but the place will reward you with its vibrant summer life.
The beach is big enough, but there are also many people in July-August, especially on the hottest days. To find a place for parking on those days, you may need to go to the city's outskirts to the Badparkering.
For those of you who love wind and beach activities, there is also a kite school.
So there is no reason to not visit Lomma while you're in Skåne.

Skåre havsbad
We discovered this beach this spring when we were looking for a place for a picnic. And it interested us because of the sign saying it is the best place for swimming! (3 stars out of 3). It has a long pier like other Baltic Sea beaches, and there is shallow water at the coastline - perfect for kids. The trees provide you with shade in sunny weather - this is what I love Skåne coast for.
Not far from this place, you can find a little nature reserve and Trelleborg golf club, and the Karl XII monument, located at the beautiful place.

I can't say that I was surprised to discover how many amazing places are here in Southern Sweden. I was prepared in some sense because I read about this region a lot, even before arriving here. But every time I come to the sea or lake, I can't stop myself from saying, "How beautiful it is today!" I love these places in any weather because only nature has the power to heal the soul and fill it with inspiration and hope.
