Perekotypole

The Ukrainian landscape with a horse on the green meadow

Do you know the meaning of “perekotypole”? That's what we call the tumbleweed in Ukrainian - the plant separated from its roots that rolls in the fields spreading its seeds. Literally, “перекоти поле” means “roll it over the field”.

The south of Ukraine, the place where I was born and grew up, is the plain, endless territory on the northern coast of the Black Sea. The cities and villages there are located at a big distance from each other, so when you appear on the road somewhere between them, you can experience the incredible feeling of freedom in every breath of the steppe air. We cherish our freedom.

Millions of Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes when the war began on February 24, 2022. Most of them ended up in Europe. Europeans wonder how we can speak two native languages and sometimes have the same traditions as they do.

This blog aims to share with the world my vision of Ukrainian traditions, in which I grew up, and to show how my family is building a new life abroad, assimilating into the new country. Hope you will find out some new interesting aspects, especially the traditional Ukrainian food recipes since we are very proud of our cuisine 😋 And I believe I will be lucky enough to return home someday when it becomes safe and show you more beautiful places with amazing stories from Ukraine!

There are six main topics in my blog:

Ukrainian traditions - Swedish traditions

Ukrainian culture - Swedish culture

Ukrainian food - Swedish food
